Wasting the Best and Brightest: Substance Abuse at America's Colleges and Universities CASA Conference 2007 Report There’s no doubt that the alcohol problem on our campuses is a raging fire. In a typical year, thanks to alcohol use more than 1,700 college students die, about 100,000 are raped and sexually assaulted and 700,000 are assaulted.” CASA Slideshow: Summary of Conference: 28 pages “In the past 10 years there have been no improvement/decline in the rates of students drinking. 22.9% of college students meet the criteria for alcohol, drug abuse or dependence vs. 9% of the general population. What are the consequences of this abuse: Poor academic performance, medical problems, depression, anxiety, suicide, risky sex, violence, property damage.... “ Since the last study in 1993-94, the situation on American’s campuses has deteriorated. Accepting as inevitable this college culture of alcohol and other drug abuse threatens not only the present well being of millions of college students, but also the future capacity of our nation to maintain its leadership in the fiercely competitive global economy.

MY OWN THOUGHTS: College has changed in many ways the past few decades. College administrative rules typically do not allow communication with a parent about their child’s grades or activities at school (although some colleges do offer “authorization” forms). Most colleges will only contact the parent if there is a medical emergency. The social atmosphere has also greatly changed. Binge drinking is popular (see above links). Many who binge drink also use other drugs. “Friends with benefits” and hooking up are norms of the new dating scene. Sex is often expected as part of a date. Relationship has a new meaning. It shouldn’t be surprising that with the increase in drinking and drugs that sexual activities increase as does sexually transmitted infections. Years ago it was safe to accept an open drink from almost anyone at a campus party or take a drink of punch from a communal bowl. Times have changed and so has our knowledge about the effects of drinking and the drug scene. Today, it is unsafe to take an open drink from a “friend” and lids should be kept on the drinks so pills/powder cannot be slipped into the cup.
