This is the policy at the University of Florida. These privacy rights are fairly standard at most colleges and Universities. Bottom line even if you are paying for your child’s education you don’t have a right (or often access) to see his/her grades.

What is Privacy?

Pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students have the right to privacy, which means they can limit disclosure of their USF directory information from third parties, where permitted by applicable Federal and State laws, until they graduate or discontinue enrollment for three consecutive terms.

What is Directory Information?

Directory Information includes:  student name, addresses and telephone listings, birth date, major field of study, dates of attendance, enrollment status, degrees and awards, participation in officially registered activities and sports, prior educational institutions, photographic image, and other similar information.

When to Request Privacy

You may exercise your privacy right at any time; however, your request must be received and processed before the end of the second week of the Fall term to prevent your directory information from appearing in USF printed or electronic media available to the public.

Available Privacy Options:

Confidentiality - prohibits the release of your contact information on mailing lists* made available to the general public, third parties, or other non-university officials. Additionally, your contact information will be excluded from telephone or electronic mail inquiries.

Complete Privacy - excludes any information about you or your status as a USF student from being released. NOTE:  This is the strictest level of privacy and prohibits disclosure of your name in Commencement, Honors programs, or other lists* made available to the public; it also means that you cannot telephone or e-mail us and discuss your own USF student affiliation.

Partial Privacy - includes all aspects of Complete Privacy EXCEPT your name may be included in Commencement and Honors programs.

FERPA Waiver authorizes the release of confidential records held about you to your parent(s) or other designated third party.
